Hello everybody. Firstly, i will like to welcome you all for visiting my blog. This will be the blog for my 'Language Arts Ace-blog'. Which is to say, this blog will be use for the purpose of Language Arts ACE 2009.
Maybe i should start of with some self introduction of myself. I am Lim Wen Bin (12) from 1o3. And you can find out more about me on the right hand side of the blog, which has different boxes being filled up. Examples of my information being filled in the boxes are my hobbies, 'about me' and so on. So do read up on my blog and my post oftenly. You are most welcome to tag on the chat box if you do have any opinion that you might want to raise or comments that you want to let me know, so that i can improve on it.
That’s all about the introduction. Back to the current affairs. This week's(week 3) current affair debate is held on Tuesday 20/1/2009. The topic is on economical development will always have the upper hand. We are very honored to have Issac Lim to be our host, Tan Jun to act as Dr Yacoob, our chairman Yong Rui to play the role of environmentalist, Yin Pin to be the business, and last but not least, Lenneth to be the fisherman for the debate.
Now, let me refresh you memory first before telling you what's my point of view. Dr yacoob mentioned that reclaiming land is very important and to build buildings and IR(integrated resort) to boost Singapore economic and help the people have who lost their jobs during recession recently. He also mentioned that we should not over spend on environment till our county is stable and have enough funds to concentrate on environment. Conclusion-Economic growth is the key for Singapore to become a stable country. In my point of view, i think that reclaiming land and building IR and buildings is a long-term project. By the time when the project is completed, I think Singapore would have already overcome the recession. Those that have lost their jobs might have already go out of Singapore to find jobs. So, even reclaiming land is important, i think we should use the money wisely and think of giving money to those needy people who is suffering during the recession. This may help them to relieve their problem they are facing.
As for the environmentalist, he said that now is not the time to reclaim land but focus more on environment. He talked about species extinction, deforestation e.g. have taken place because of over population and over consumption. In the 21st century, more and more people are living in big houses, driving expensive car that burn a lot of petrol. Conclusion-People neglected the environment when they are enjoying their life. He said that using money on the environment can make Singapore a better country, cleaner and more beautiful country. This will result in attracting the tourist, indirectly boosting Singapore economic. In my point of view, i totally agree to what he says. But i don't think now is the right time to focus too much on the environment. While recession is still yet to overcome by most or all country in the world, many people will learn to use less, save more. If they would to fly and travel to Singapore, it will cost a bomb as the price of everything now is going up. Thus, i think the tourist would rather stay in their country instead of coming to Singapore.
Unfortunately, our business man, yin pin, had prepared wrong things and was not able to deliver his speech on the spot. But he did prepare a lot even though he prepared the wrong things. I think the number of things he prepared was commendable. Thus, we should not say things bad about him and if possible, praise him for his preparation. Imagine you are him, you also would not wish that people will say bad things if you had done something wrong. Am i right? Everyone commits mistake, but the most important is whether you learn from the mistake.
And last but not least, our fisherman! He did a great job in capturing the audience attention. He talks about the effects on marine life if reclaiming land were to take place. Some effects that may take place are the sea creatures that stay near the shore may die. And there will be lesser fishes for the fisherman to catch. This will affect the income of the fisherman. And making their life hard. As he mentioned, full time fisherman are usually low educated. Thus, if reclaiming land were to really take place, fisherman will really suffer. In my point of view, reclaiming land will take place either recently or in the future. Thus, I think the fisherman should try to educate themselves by taking up lesson like English lesson, computer lesson, to help them when they are finding jobs. Chinese they have one saying that goes 'huo dao lao, xue dao lao'. It means that no matter how old are you, you should continue to learn and 'self-upgrade' yourself. I think this saying same goes to the fisherman.
Lastly, I would like to end of by saying some words. Economic and environment is equally important. I don't really think that one will get the upper hand and the other one get to lower hand. But most importantly, I think it is still our people. If there is no people, we would have not been able to reclaim land, or make Singapore a cleaner and more beautiful a better country. Thus, i think we should first use the money to help the needy first. Then discuss on which project, reclaiming land or cleaning and improving the environment, to carry out first, or even better, both being carried out together.
No matter how good or bad was the debate, I think we should say a thank you to the debaters for spending their precious time on researching and preparing. Thank you very much! We appreciate your debate a lot. It was indeed a great debate to me!
This shall be the end of the post for today. Should there be any opinion or comments, you can tag at the chat box. Thank you.
